caravan parks strahan west coast tasmania

Strahan is a small town and former port on the west coast of Tasmania, Australia. It is now a significant tourism icon in the region. Strahan Harbour and Risby Cove form part of the north-east end of Long Bay on the northern end of Macquarie Harbour. At the 2006 census, Strahan had a permanent population of just over 600 people, however this number swells significantly during the busier tourism seasons. Strahan has a dark and fascinating convict past and is set on the edge of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and on the shores of the expansive Macquarie Harbour, Strahan is the gateway to Tasmania's world renowned World Heritage listed Franklin–Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. Boat cruises provide a memorable journey through World Heritage Wilderness into the pristine temperate rainforests of the Gordon River. Nearby, in Macquarie Harbour is Sarah Island, a once notorious convict prison and a powerful reminder of the brutal treatment of Tasmania's convicts in years gone by.
